Remote by Default 2: the “new normal”?
We are delighted to share that we will be providing ‘in-house’ NHS inclusive co-design expertise for the next phase of Remote by Default, a research programme led by joint Chief Investigators Professor Trish Greenhalgh and Associate Professor Sara Shaw from the University of Oxford, the Nuffield Trust and the University of Plymouth.
With NHS organisations transitioning back to ‘business as usual’ operating models, the overarching aim of this project is to inform high-quality, safe and equitable care in UK general practice in the context of policies which require phone, video or e-consultation by default.
The question of whether general practice should provide remote consultations by default, and not as a next best substitute in the absence of face-to-face consultations as we saw during the pandemic still needs investigation. We are delighted to be exploring the issue in this project which is funded by the National Institute for Health Research: Health Services and Delivery Research, alongside the academic institutions.
How our team is supporting the work
We will be helping to answer research questions such as “How can we ensure that the remote-by-default model supports high-quality, safe care to all patients (including those at risk of digital exclusion)?’’.
We will support the delivery of four digital inclusion workshops to help co-design ways to combine remote and face-to-face models.
We will also support two digital inclusion co-design workshops that along with action research will help colleagues to build mixed-method longitudinal case studies to support practice.

More of our work helping to make remote video consultations inclusive…
We have recently published our Knowledge into Action Briefing on Inclusive Remote Video Consultations. The briefing is informed by earlier work with the University of Oxford and the Nuffield Institute, and our work within Leeds and York Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
You can access our Inclusive Remote Video Consultation Guide which shares insights from a digital inclusion workshop focused on remote video consultations.
We’ve also helped shape work in relation to inclusive remote video consultations with the West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership. You can access the case study for this work which contains a checklist that you should consider here.
